Food History: For the Great Cause – A Meal from The Suffrage Cook Book

Monday, March 20th 6pm

Join us as we explore the roots of The Suffrage Cook Book and taste our interpretation of its recipes during this three course Food History dinner! Serving as a tool of public influence, this book served as more than just a list of recipes from renowned suffragists such as Jane Addams, Carrie Chapman Catt, Governor Hiram Johnston, and many more. Providing a better understanding of the suffrage movement, local connections, and the relevance of this cookbook will be our featured speaker Dr. Linda Lockhart.

Dr. Linda Lockhart is an associate professor in Marietta College’s Department of Communication, whose primary research focus is mass communication history. A mid-Ohio Valley native, her research focuses on local and regional communicators of significance. In addition to the content analysis of the Marietta newspapers’ coverage of slavery, shared in Liquid Boundaries, her projects have included studies of A.W. Campbell, an editor in Wheeling who was a founding father of West Virginia and Angelique Martin, a mid-nineteenth century Marietta resident who wrote for women’s equality. Her most recent research explores the work of a pioneer in women’s radio, long-time Marietta resident Sally Hille. Lockhart holds degrees in journalism from Ohio University and Marietta College. After residing in Newport, Ohio, for 40 years, Lockhart now lives in Hockingport, Ohio.
