SUMMARY:Teaching American History Seminar: Westward Expansion to Civil War
DESCRIPTION:This elementary school teacher focused seminar will explore doc
 uments on the expansion of the United States after the founding\, includin
 g the impact of the Northwest Ordinance. Teachers will be asked to look at
  how westward expansion furthered tensions with Native Americans and the i
 ssue on slavery as the nation moved toward the Civil War.\n\nThis program 
 will be conducted as a discussion\, utilizing primary source documents as 
 the only readings\, and with the Discussion Leader facilitating the conver
 sation\, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants\, therefore\, are
  highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready wit
 h questions. All attendees will receive a Letter of Attendance at the end
