 r of the U.S. Coast Guard Historian's Office\, Bowie\, MD\, will present
 Lincoln's Navy:  The Men\, Ships and Organization\, 1861 - 65.\n \nThe U
.S. Navy was completely unprepared for war when Fort Sumter was fired upon
on April 12\, 1861.  The daring and tenacity demonstrated by the fledgli
ng Confederate Navy demanded that Lincoln's naval forces advance from the
strategies and tactics employed in the preceding decades.  In addition\,
President's Lincoln's ambitious Anaconda Plan imposed unprecedented deman
ds on Union naval resources.  Mr. Canney will account for how the sailors
\, ships and leadership of the Federal Navy were re-organized and new tech
nologies\, such as ironclads\, steam power\, and innovations in naval ordi
nance\, were adopted to yield successes in the blockade of Southern ports\
, open-sea ship duels\, inland river raids\, and the reduction of coastal
 fortifications\, essential to Union victory.\n\nDonald L. Canney is a U.S.
Air Force veteran and a former high school history instructor.  He is re
tired following a career as Registrar of the U.S. Coast Guard Historian's
Office\, Bowie\, Maryland\, Mr. Canney is a prolific author and has publi
