SUMMARY:Commodore Whipple Barn Mural Dedication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Ohio History Connection is sponsoring a mural of Commodore
Abraham Whipple who took a leading active role in the American Revolution
by challenging the naval supremacy of Britain’s Royal Navy.  After the
war\, Whipple became one of the founders of Marietta where he built ocean-
going sailing ships.  He is buried in the city’s Mound Cemetery along w
ith other Revolutionary War veterans.\n\nThe mural was painted by Scott Ha
gan who rendered the Ohio Bicentennial logo on barns in every Ohio county.
The design—prepared by graphic artist David Browning—shows Whipple
as he appeared in a portrait by artist Edward Savage.   The mural also sh
ows the USS Columbus\, a ship of the Continental Navy which Whipple comman
ded.  The ship is shown flying the Grand Union Flag\, America’s first n
ational flag.  Whipple’s monument in Mound Cemetery is also displayed.\
n\nThe mural has been paid for by private donated funds.\n\nThe mural feat
uring Commodore Whipple joins a collection of Ohio History Barns around th
e state all showcasing historically important Ohioans\, Ohio accomplishmen
ts\, and Ohio symbols. Among them are sharpshooter Annie Oakley (Darke Cou
nty)\, Shawnee Chief Tecumseh (Greene County)\, the Packard Automobile (Tr
umbull County) and the first Medal of Honor recipient Jacob Parrott (Hardi
n County).\n\nSoon the Ohio History Connection will sponsor Ohio History B
arns honoring President Ulysses S. Grant and General Charles Young.  Betw
een now and the 250th anniversary of American Independence the Ohio Histor
y Connection plans additional Ohio History Barns across the state presenti
ng a diverse collection of Ohio stories along the state’s highways.\n\nA
dedication ceremony will occur at 10:30 am\, July 5\, 2023 at the barn at
2015 St. Rt. 821 near exit 6 on I-77.  The barn has been made available
by its owner Mr. George Broughton.
