During the early years of the settlement, Marietta families faced many adversities. Fires, drownings, accidents, childbirth, and various diseases were just a few of the life threatening perils. But few dangers matched those of the “sickly seasons” of 1822 and 1823. This unknown killer decimated the community and took the lives of hundreds of local residents from all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds.
