Preliminary Construction Bids for Two Colony Theatre Restoration Projects Awarded
By Hunt Brawley
The Hippodrome/Colony Historical Theatre Association (HCHTA) recently awarded bids for two interior restoration projects to Tiffin Scenic Studios and Silverheels, Incorporated.
Tiffin Scenic Studios of Tiffin, Ohio, will team up with Evergreene Painting Studios from NYC, to perform the highly specialized work required to restore and re-rig the fire curtain mural. The fire curtain mural (circa 1919) is a historic treasure and the only original existing decorative item from the theatre when it was built. A $30,000 award by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in the field of visual arts made the fire curtain restoration project possible.
Local contractor, Silverheels, Inc., will begin preliminary restoration work funded partially by a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission. The restoration includes some exterior doors and reconstruction of the first-floor lobby stairway (formerly located on the right side of the lobby) as originally erected in 1919. First-floor
